Subtractive Method Artwork
This project was unique, in that I worked in reverse. I began by covering the entire paper in charcoal, then working with hard and kneaded erasers to progressively remove the charcoal, creating the still life image of the bovine skull. One thing I had difficulty with was building depth and highlights along the complex curvature of the bone, but with enough erasing effort and continuously building over lines, I believe I was successful in it. I enjoyed the flexibility of this medium, if I erased too much or in the wrong place, I could simply add more charcoal and blend it away. I found that this was much more forgiving than erasing mistakes on a white background.
