Furniture
To coincide with the launch of the newly rebranded CFCCA, I was invited to design some benches and stools to replace the old, bulky furniture that sat in the reception area.

As the functional requirements for the pieces were very straightforward, I focused mainly on developing simple visual structures that mirrored the strict geometry of “Shi”, a prevalent type of traditional Chinese furniture consisting of plain tops and circular-section legs.
To retain a sense of familiarity, the furniture's dimensions correspond almost exactly to those of the old range.
The tubular steel framework (chosen to withstand the occasional flooding of the buildings lower floors) is paired with thin ash tops to keep physical and visual weight to a minimum. The legs are braced with ribbon-like struts, echoing the structural ‘apron’ found on traditional furniture pieces.
As saving space is necessary, the stools are stackable, but rather than having to hide them away they can be left out to form a dramatic display reminiscent of Chinese architecture.
