Parchi | Newspaper

Parchi is a newspaper based on receipts. During my exchange semester in the Netherlands, Jumbo - a supermarket chain that had a store just around the corner from where I lived - became an almost daily stop. I had an endless collection of receipts from it, and decided to make something that would remind me of my visits to the store.
I found it really interesting that you could probably make assumptions about a person or their lifestyle based on their grocery receipt - but if it is a short receipt, that only shows you the number of articles and total amount, it opens up your imagination to what the stranger who left it behind in the trash could be like, what they bought, where they are from, where they went after leaving the store and so on. Receipts can also be a way of holding on to memories, for hoarders like myself - a receipt of groceries from a cooking date night, movie and bus tickets and more.

This project explores multiple experiments that opened up new avenues for research and thinking about something as simple as a slip of paper in various ways. A recurring visual is that of ironed receipts - using heat on thermal paper leaves a black impression on the receipts. This was one of my first experiments, and it ended up guiding the look of the paper. The title is handmade, with Linocut, and one of the spreads shows origami chairs made out of receipts.
