QUEERCIONARIO - BOOK DESIGN FOR KUIR*

This dictionary was created to help people understand terms and their meanings in order to facilitate and improve dialogue, as well as learning about the LGBTQ+ community.

Not all of the terminology used by LGBTQ+ people are covered in this glossary.  Language is continually evolving. New words are created as a result of societal, cultural, and technological changes. Similar to how the LGBTQ community and the world around it change, so do the words we use. Because of this, gathering the entire vocabulary into a single book is challenging. Therefore, a general vocabulary choice was made.

Always pay attention to and respect the language a person uses to describe themselves. Use the language that LGBTQ individuals ask you to use. The general do´s and don'ts covered in this glossary won't necessarily apply to every single person in every single situation. Use another word if someone requests it instead of the ones provided here. Simply put, it is the appropriate thing to do.

P.S.: I want to point out the fact that some of the words in this dictionary have the ability to encourage both positive as well as negative responses. Labels can hurt depending on how they are used or intended, so I want to be clear that this glossary is not meant to be a manual for proper or improper language usage.

* KUIR is a fictional LGBTQ+ cultural center and refuge. Designed to serve as a safe space to promote dialogue, critical thinking and social awareness through shows and online content.
