A Suitor's Portrait
The ongoing project questions the notion of asymmetrical power concerning the gaze and the associated representation of women within Western portraiture. This is achieved through mixed-media photographs that obscure elements of the subject's face to question the commoditisation of female beauty.
The painterly style challenges the historical objectification of women through commissioned portraits for suitors. Particular attention has been paid to how the subject becomes unavailable to the viewer through abstraction, thus rejecting the traditional function of a portrait.
