My concept for this project was a design and art-focused magazine called .Zip. I decided to go with the name .Zip since a zip file is a way to compress one or more files together. Graphic designers often use this compression method to transport their files. Similarly, I want .Zip to feel like a comprehensible, condensed version of what is going on in the world pertaining to many forms of art. The main buyer of this magazine will be people in the design world, especially graphic designers. It will also cater to people just generally interested in design and culture looking for an interesting read to keep on their coffee table.
I had a few key goals for this magazine. Being a design- focused magazine, I want the cover to in of itself really feel like an art piece. With this being said, I wanted there to be very few cover lines and a very visually appealing image on the cover. Each page will be well designed with the overall style. I would best describe the intended style to be minimal with funky accent elements such as fonts, photos, and shapes. Featured stories would be about topics such as up-and- coming artists, art shows, and other design-related stories. Smaller articles would be more how-to focused, such as how to make a career in design, how to navigate the creative process, or how to price your work. Overall, .Zip would strive to create a physical collection celebrating artists of all types but emphasizing in graphic design. Supporting small business, minority artists, and sustainability would be highly valued in this magazine.
