Take a deep breath in. Out. In. Out. Now relax and contemplate a world where plastic is completely integrated with the environment. Plastisapiens is a meditative virtual reality experience that allows us to consider this world with curiosity, playfulness and even a sense of wonder.
Narrative Structure
This immersive film is made up of three chapters, set in different times and places. Rooted in modern scientific research, the narrative slowly gives way to a strangely beautiful and ironic speculative work of eco-fiction, a journey through time, evolution and imagined futures.
Chapter 1
In this first part, we are in a living and porous cave. The breath of the place is synchronized with ours. We produce plastic, the environment absorbs it, and then we eat the particle in turn. The more plastic we consume, the more plastic we become.
Chapter 2
We sink into the ground to find ourselves in the seabed, in a distant past, before humans even existed. We learn about the origin of life and the creation of plastic. Then we go back slowly towards the waters. In this journey through time, we are first a sea creature, then we become human.
Chapter 3
In this final act, we rise out of the water, onto the Platosphere, in a distant future. We have become Plastisapiens. By interacting with organisms around us, then watching as our virtual, organic selves merge with plastic, the experience creates a safe space to empathize with a material that binds us all. As we are gently guided through an awe-inspiring universe of hybrid bodies, we are ultimately left to ponder how the interchanging relationship between humans and the environment transforms our identity.
