Project Brief: Using the design thinking process, identify a problem that can be solved with an app. Document your process, the final result being a case study.
Step One: Find an opportunity and empathize with the user
After a lot of thinking and google searches, I looked into cooking+recipe apps and what they didn't do. The two apps I looked into were Food Network Kitchen and AllRecipe.
Food Networks' app is very thorough and essentially teaches how to make a recipe through a video. This direction makes sense since they basically do the same thing on cable tv. However, most of the recipes do not come with videos or barely any pictures other than the finished product.
AllRecipes is very different from Food Network, regular users can submit recipes for others to use. Reviews are very important to show how good a recipe is. Similar to the previous app, there are no step by step pictures or the option to post on in a review. One interesting thing is the 'Dinner Spinner', which is just a glorified, but hidden, recipe filtering system.
Having looked at two apps and doing some other home cooking research, I decided my app would be focused on user progress and step-by-step instructions.
I made a survey to learn more about the people that cook at home and how they do it. The most important data is displayed about. Most of the survey results were expected. However, when asked if being able to go step-by-stey and seeing your progress in a recipe would make cooking easier, it was an overwhelming no. This went against my previous idea, but in the best way.
Step Two: Find opportunities for innovation
The results of the survey pointed more towards filtering of recipes, still focusing on adding more pictures to the instructions. The idea is now to create an app where users can comment and contribute to recipes in a way that benefits future users. Users will be able to curate and search for specific recipes according to their needs and wants.
Step Three: Build representations of my idea via wire framing and test them
Step Four: Finalize the design
