FALL '22: "BRUCE LEE" TYPOGRAPHY POSTER
This is a creative typography project that centers around iconic actor/martial artist and Asian-American icon Bruce Lee. The quote that you see says, "Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one". Not only was Lee well known as a martial artist and actor, but he was also known as a philosopher and brought his beliefs and teachings into his martial arts practice as well as roles in TV and film. this creative typography relates to the great Bruce Lee who is an icon amongst the Asian community and to the rest of the world. This typography reflects one of his quotes that relate to the human mind and condition. This very much reflects the ideals of Bruce Lee and what he stood for when he was alive. Divining into his background, Lee was born in San Fransisco, California and he later moved to Hong Kong but then moved back to the United States when he was around his 20s. Lee experienced many racial and cultural problems as an Asian immigrant and he wanted to break down those barriers and prove a point to the world. Bruce Lee is iconic for having a great background within the realm of martial arts and that was later expressed when he held teachings to people of all races and genders learning his martial arts and philosophy. But his name quickly spread around across the world once he got into the realm of Hollywood and Hong Kong cinema where he was enormously successful. Ultimately changing the culture around Asian-American communities. Bruce Lee definitely made an impact on the world in terms of diversity, expression, philosophy, and culture. Many people around the world still use his form of martial arts and teachings to this day and his films and TV filmography are still celebrated to this day. Personally, Bruce Lee as well as other Asian figures have made an impact on my family and friends as well. Bruce Lee was another Asian hero to look up to growing up since there weren’t many media representing Asians in such a way. That is why I will celebrate his being for the long run. For the design, I went for a more urban street look with the graffiti font. Since Bruce Lee was born in San Fransisco, when you walk down the streets of SF even in Chinatown you will see a lot of graffiti street art that represent the culture of San Fransisco. So I wanted to tribute Lee in this type of fashion with what I see on the streets of his birth place.
