BREATHE Marbling Project.

Mamastudio’s interest in combining traditional craft methods and modern graphic design led us to a new project involving paper marbling. Together we created handmade marbled paper utilizing old-world techniques. We integrated classic bookbinding and gold embossing techniques with graphic design post-production.

Paper marbling is the art of producing multi-colored patterns and effects on paper or fabric. It’s history dates to 12th century Turkey where it was used for decorative purposes, as well as to prevent forgery of official documents. By the 17th century the art was brought to Europe and became and remains an essential part of bookbinding and decorative arts.

Mamastudio developed the one-of-a-kind marbled paper into identity materials for our annual birthday celebration. Posters, t-shirts, buttons and special journals were all produced for the occasion.

Our self-initiated project resulted in the production of notebooks, journals, framed artwork and more. Our pieces were exhibited and sold at an annual design conference.
