The Nok'khanya Light
The Nok'khanya Light Collection is a Collaboration between us & Ashanti Design (Lighting Manufacturer). The product draws inspiration from the vernacular architecture of Southern Africa. We combined handcrafted techniques and industrial production methods to create a unique product that sits well in any space.
The name Nok'khanya means 'To bring the Light' in isiZulu. The light lives up to the name in many ways.
The concept for the light was inspired by the idea of blending Traditional Craft techniques with Modern Industrial production methods. Creating something that is uniform and consistent but also allows for the beautiful imperfection that comes with the Hand made.

Initial Development started in 2019 with capturing the distinct shape of the frame then trying to find a suitable material to weave on to the frame. Several iterations were done over the years until 2021.

Working with Ashanti (the manufacturer) to develop the concept from a prototype into a refined product that will be launched and then sold. The process was quick, happening in a matter of weeks. The material chosen to weave the lampshade is left over material from t-shirt production in Madagascar.
