An efficient way to deter burglars from your home is to make it less obvious when you are not around. According to The New York Times, people often intentionally leave lights on while they are away to make it look like they are at home. However, having lights on throughout the house does not actually mimic the way an occupant would use lights. A better way to keep burglars away is to integrate smart lights into the home security system.
Smart lights, once installed, are connected to smartphones and can be operated remotely. They also feature options like randomizing or setting periods when the lights should go on and off. Besides remote control, some smart lights come with sensors and receive signals from security cameras to automatically illuminate areas when movement is detected. This is called motion-activated lighting. According to security experts, when located around the outside of a house, motion-activated lighting often scares away intruders, since there's no way for them to know whether the light is automated or was switched on by an occupant.
