Sally Mann Documentary Response
The Sally Mann documentary is something that changed my view on photography ever since I saw it last semester. Her work of using an old camera, sparked an old interest of mine of using an old camera to take photos again. Then along with her dedication, views on the world and not caring about what other people thought made me want to become a better photographer. Learning about her family and struggles in photography taught me a few things as well and made me realize why her work is controversial. She released images of her family in the nude as well as dead corpses. These pictures are what she is most known for, understandably. I respect her art, some of it is jaw dropping and her dedication to get this art is something else entirely. Her carefree attitude is something else she is known for, but it's something that I can't help but wince at. She was good at what she did, but she may have went too far. Her perspective opened my mind that every artist is different, she has her own methods and I have mine. That's okay too, I wouldn't want to copy anything of hers anyway. I want to make my own work, independently.
