What remains: the life and work of Sally Mann
Zeitgeist Films (2008)
After watching the documentary, “What remains: the life and work of Sally Mann," I learned a lot more about the photographer Sally Mann and her life and work. It was really interesting to learn about how her life and family influence her work, from her children to her experiences in her marriage. Sally explained how some of these photos she takes may never be shown until after she’s passed, but it’s comforting knowing they exist. I think that was something profound for me to think about, we often take so many photos that don’t get shown, but we keep so many photos. I just felt that it was quite thought provoking and made me think about my own photos and how many I choose not to show. I think that after this I’ll revisit my work over time and look at everything that I chose not to share and think about why. I can understand why Sally Mann’s work was seen as controversial though, the content of her photos are often disturbing, such as the decaying bodies and the flesh and bones of Eva. However, I can still appreciate the ideas and emotions that go into the actual themes and content of her work.
