Sally Mann Reflection

Sally Mann “What Remains” reflection

My first impression after watching the Sally Mann video is how artistically fueled she is. I especially liked watching her talk about her family and the raw moments they included in the video. For example, watching the dog catch a chicken through the window and behind the scenes of family posing for her photographs. I feel like I got a real sense of who she is and what her work is about. I have no doubt that her work in "Immediate Family" had good intentions, despite the criticism. Her photos are really beautiful and the vision she has for her work comes through clearly. The most impactful part for me was when she found out her show at the Pace Gallery was cancelled. I think her vulnerability reveals a lot about what artists go through with their work. She was struggling to accept that her work is still worth creating, even if no one else will see it. She expressed feeling like “old news” and that no one will care about her work anymore. However, I am glad we got to see the happy ending and her success with getting "What Remains" on museum walls. Overall, I feel inspired after watching the video and admire Mann's dedication and her family's willingness to contribute by modeling.
