This project forms an element of the Tactical Place Making Proposal I have developed for the final project of my degree in Architectural Venue Design. As part of my plan I am installing some real time projects and this is one of them.
The piece has been developed from a previous project of mine which I completed at the end of my BTEC in Art and Design. I kept the sails from this project and used them as a starting point for the new one.
The concept for my entire project is one of juxtaposition; I feel that by installing pieces that contrast highly with the exisiting fabric of the site will encourage people to stop and re-examine what is already there.
To adapt the sails for this project and to work on this concept I worked on exaggerating their geometery with folding and bending; I did this through manipulation of paper copies of the 1:20 sails from the original model.

Once I had made shapes I felt suited my purpose I looked at how this shape would be held. To do this I was inspired by some tiling on a building on the site. I abstarcted it to form girds over the new shapes to keep the faceted nature.
Over the course of the project I consulted with a structural engineer to make sure that the piece would be stable once installed. After many discussions we decided on the following model of hanging where each sail is hung from a series of hooks in two wooden batons with cat gut.
Due to time and money constraints I could only make the plastic grid casing for the yellow sail so in light of this I decided to install the yellow piece underneath the blue sail without its casing.
On the day prior to the installation I recieved permission to install the piece in the Silk Mill Museum whih is across fromt he site so that I could carry across and install it simply the morning after. I also secured the use of the equipment at the Silk Mill for the installation and the help of Derby Makers.

Unfortunately on the day the ladders that I had acquired were not taller enogh for the space and I could not gain the insurance for a cherry picker on such short notice. The piece how ever was granted planning permission and permission from the owner to be installed on the site.
The following images show the piece installed temporarily at the Silk Mill.

After it became apparent that the installation would not be posible in the time frame I was able to secure space to install the piece at the University of Derby as part of the degree show.
During the first installation I had seperated the yellow sail in two sections to make it more manageable for installation. When installing at Markeaton Street Campus I kept them like this as I felt having two 3D elements balanced the overall installation.
