Persuasive Poster - Assessment (Graphic Design)

"Fun for you, Prison for them."

Target audience - Families with young kids,
Reason – They are the target audience attending the Sea World theme park on the Gold Coast.
Sea World is the only attraction in Australian that breeds dolphins in captivity (Ferrier, 2021). Dolphins swim approximately 100km per day in the wild, yet live in tiny pools at Sea World (World Animal Protection, n.d.), which compares to being in jail. Therefore, my three concepts show; a dolphin in a small pool, surrounded by faces, being watched and stuck; a giant pool of water, with an alone dolphin stuck in a small pool, contrasting with the pod of dolphins swimming in the free water; and portraying the pool as a jail cell. I rendered this idea as the message is simple and quickly engages the reader. Text ‘Fun for you, Prison for them’ with a text backdrop to highlight the key words, ‘Fun’ and ‘Prison’. Additionally, the close-up image allowed me to create emotion within the dolphin’s face to increase the audience’s empathy. The three typefaces have been selected due to being impactful for poster designs; Georgia for ‘Fun’ due to being the first word and helping ‘guide the readers eyes along’ (Byrne, 2018, para.23); Helvetica for secondary words, for their minimalism and sans serif being easy to read (Creative Market, 2022); and finally, the word ‘Prison’ uses a large, bold typeface to grab the viewers’ attention. Italics are used to add emphasis and draw attention (Waterton, 2017). If I had more time, I would improve the black and white poster, as I do not feel the impact as much.
