S04A - Vračar Intervention

First project during sixth semester – Architectural intervention in the Vračar neighbourhood, Belgrade; Multifamily housing.
Intervention came from the analysis of the wider site proposed by the faculty. Conclusion was that the Šumatovačka street was in the worst condition and in need of urban restoration. Not only does the street need to be made wider, but the buildings themselves need to be built with more conscience. Current trend in the neighbourhood is a transformation from single-family homes to multifamily blocks, usually out of proportion (example - seven storey building in a one-way street).
With that in mind a concept of modular structures of maximum four floors that move away from the street in both horizontal and vertical grid was developed. And there are multiple reasons for it:
First – designing housing blocks that are of higher living standard and lower density
Second - street is no longer a dark canyon deprived of natural light.
Third - with the withdrawal of a volume in the private plot, an option of a piazza in the courtyard was opened; blurring the difference between street and yard. This also coincides with the traditional life in the courtyard in this area.
Fourth - withdrawn volume created terraces for the inhabitants, bringing even more life to the exterior of the buildings. Some of the terraces are not only for individual units, but are also shared spaces.
Since the concept predicts mostly filing the missing elements in the street row, structure that caries the modules is also used to ,,fill out” the gaps in the row. Because in this withdrawal, some modules are erased entirely to let more light in the structure
