How to Tie a Figure-8 Follow-through Knot

A Bucks County, Pennsylvania resident, Nickolaus Von Dohlen is a wealth advisor with Crossgate Wealth Advisors, LLC. He helps clients with investment management and financial planning and leads the firm’s investment team to provide research and analysis. Away from his work, Nickolaus Von Dohlen is a keen rock climber.

Most rock climbers use the figure-8 follow-through knot as their tie-in knot, a stopper knot tied at the end of the rope. The knot is fairly simple to tie and is one of the strongest available, ideal for climbing.

To create this knot safely, start by making a loose 8 with the rope. Wrap the end of the loose knot around your support before passing that end back through the knot. Then, take it behind the knot in a large loop before passing it next to the upper line. From there, take the end out parallel to the standing part of the knot before pulling the ends to tighten. You should find that the finished knot forms a tight and secure loop.
