CREATIVE WORKSHOPS
ON THE OLGA PRINCESS STREET IN LVIV | 2022
This bachelor's thesis presents the project of creative workshops in Lviv. Main location of them are planned to be in Princess Olga street on the site of an abandoned building
The main idea of the functional creative workshops on the site is to revive and improve the social and physical ties of the neighborhood, enrich the architecture and diversify the leisure opportunities for residents.
This project proposition is to design a public creative space, with a combination of working and leisure spaces.
The creation idea of such art space appeared as a result of reflection and personal research. It turned out, there are very few examples of such a complex public creative workshops of this level. Most of them either have a different purpose with workshops as add-on, or target one specific visitor group, or are parts of more significant buildings.
Creative workshops are an art space for all interested sections of the population who are not professionally involved in production in this field.
That is, people who have the desire, but do not have the space or resources to engage in this work, can come here and do what they want with the support of specialists or the study of relevant literature.
Creative workshops can offer different types of artistic activities such as: woodworking, metalworking, glass, sculpture, ceramics, painting, linocut or sewing. This is the place where you can share or gain valuable experience with other participants in the process. The warehouse and the hardware store will provide visitors with everything they need.
The object is designed in a favorable location in the city structure, and convenient public transport connections with the central part and the main transport hubs of the city.
The development of the site will help complete and connect the main pedestrian connections of the area and provide a point of attraction and concentration of human flows as a community center.
According to the town-planning documentation, the site is intended for the construction of public centers and multifunctional facilities, and borders with the residential area.
The functional zoning diagram of the site shows that the functional zones are distributed so that the building is located in the middle of the site. Representative areas in front of the entrances also act as recreation areas. The parking area and the household zone are located in the northern part of the site, due to its broken shape they are separated from the pedestrian zone.
The design area is large enough to provide a wide viewing angle of the object, especially advantageous from the Princess Olga street, which is also the main transport route. However, the best angle of perception of the form - from the main facade.
Taking into account all related factors, the pedestrian connections have been carefully analyzed and the detailed master plan of the territory has been developed
A small area is provided in front of the main entrance – space for better visual disclosure of the building and as a public space for recreation of visitors and residents.
Arranged a network of green islands with seats and ramps. In general, the whole space is equipped with benches and places for relaxation, and a playground for children. Car and bicycle parking are included.
The three-dimensional object model consists of three functional blocks, which are grouped around the central focus - the main hall. The major parts of the building are as follows:
   - the main block  – workshops - it contains of production facilities, service rooms, universal auditoriums and maintenance facilities,
   - exhibition block (exhibition spaces),
   - commercial block (cafe, shops)
Due to the clear division into functional blocks, as well as rectilinear forms, the planning has a clear patterns. The workshops and studios are located on the back of the building along with the atrium-garden are clearly visible. In front, the gallery corridor is the main focus. It separates the other two functions which are the exhibition and commercial blocks. These two form the main facade and are designed to attract new visitors.
The rear part of the workshops has a clear rectangular layout, and the entrance part of the exhibition space and cafes have broken forms of planning, which aim to create dynamics in space. The planning of the object is divided into two levels: the first and the second.
The main entrance is on the ground floor, through the corridor-gallery, which leads to the main central hall. Here the paths diverge - to the workshops, to the exhibition space or to the side exits. There are also cafes in the entrance block. The second level of the building repeats the first with its planning and filling
The main feature is the difference in height of the commerce block from others. This is due to the greater height of the workshops and studios of the main block and high exhibition halls.  However, the exit to the terrace, the floor level of which coincides with the second floor of the main block, is arranged on both opposite functional blocks.
Quite simple materials, such as wood, glass, brick, and white plaster, were specially used to decorate the facades.
This decision was made in order to logically combine the appearance of the object with its internal content - with materials in the workshops.
Constructive scheme - frame. The load-bearing elements are a grid of columns and floors. The gaps between the columns in the outer walls and partitions are made of gas blocks. The image shows the principle of arrangement of a green roof and the ground floor with an open outdoor gallery.
Nowadays, people are not connected with one activity during all their lives. We have an incredible number of opportunities for development in a variety of industries without a commitment to a single profession or business. This is a constant search. The project of public creative workshops is exactly this opportunity. This is the path of self-development and self-knowledge through the applied creativity. It is also an opportunity to develop and maintain your hobbies, get advice and receive feedback, find and support new social connections.
This project is an investment in healthy community development. Building such a facility is important because it increases the level of communication of the community and strengthens connections between people. Such facilities attract people of all ages, they can use their time efficiently and creatively. Which in turn has a positive effect on the emotional and psychological state.
