Book Redesign

The task was to redesign a book of our choosing. Starting from the text layout we also had to make illustrations, the cover and communicate with the printers to achieve a well working book.

I choose "Wolf Brother" from Michelle Paver as it was (and still is) one of my favourite books from my childhood. It was a great experience to reread and then work with this story and it's characters.

A feladatunk az volt, hogy újratervezzünk egy általunk választott könyvet. A szövegtördeléstől kezdve az illusztrálás és borítókészítésig minden a mi feladatunk volt még a nyomdával való kommunikáció is, hogy végeredményként egy kézbe fogható, szép és jól működő könyvet kaphassunk.

Én a "Farkastestvér" könyvet választottam Michelle Paver-től hisz ez volt (és még mindig az) gyerekkorom egyik kedvenc könyve. Nagyon jó élmény volt újraolvasni és dolgozni ezzel a történettel és a karaktereivel.

The illustrations were planned out in a few steps to make sure they would compliment the story. The most thought went into the colours since I wanted them to tell the story on their own.
I choose four main colour palettes depending on the story beats. Two of these signifying chracters and the other two connecting to the two "supernatural" forces of the story. To show these transcendent forces all other colours are muted or made monochrome besides the main two or three.

Az illusztrációkat egy pár lépésen keresztül tervezgettem, hogy minél jobban kövessék a történetet. A legtöbb gondolat a színek kitalálásába ment, mivel szerettem volna, hogy önmagukban is mesélhessenek.

Összesen négy fő színpalettát választottam. Ebből kettő karaktereket szimbolizál a másik kettő viszont a két "emberfeletti" pólusát takarja a történetnek. Hogy ezeket a természetfeletti erőket bemutassam a színek ezekben a jelenetekben egészen monokrómmá válnak kivéve a paletta kettő-három fő színét.

For example the "evil" of the story, the demon bear is heavily associated with red. I wanted this red to really pop out to show the anxiety inducing deanger of the animal.

While the "good" part of the story, the Nanuaks are there to be the solution they aren't very inviting. I choose a yellow to signal hope but rather than a warm one, I wanted it to feel sharp instead as I imagined the relics feeling too.

Például a piros színt erősen a "gonoszhoz", a démon medvéhez köti a történet. Szerettem volna, hogy ez a piros méginkább rikítson, ezzel is jelezve az állat szorongást adó veszélyét.

Közben pedig a "jó" erő, a Nanuakok bár a megoldást szolgálják nem túl hivogatóak. A sárga színt választottam, hogy reményt adjon de a melegség helyett inkább szúrós hatást akartam, hogy keltsen a fényük hisz úgy képzeltem az ereklyék is ilyen érzést árazthatnak magukból.
