South Pacific originally opened on Broadway in 1949; the show would have 1,925 performances and would win the Tony for Best Musical. It would later originally to Broadway for almost 1,000 performances and win Best Revival

When a " big time" musical such as South Pacific, the audience gets treated too wonderful acting, scenic design, costumes, dancing and singing. That is exactly what was found last evening at MPAC in Morristown, N.J.. in what I believe to be the best South Pacific that I have seen to date, both Maris McCulley and Jared Bybee put on a performance for the aegis.

Set in WW11 on an island in the South Pacific, eternal optimist Nellie (knucklehead Nellie) Forbush, McCulley is a proper Southern Bell from Little Rock, Arkansas. Emile de Becque is a French expatriate plantation owner. His wife has died but his daughter who is half Polynesian lives with him. The shows subplot follows another proper main line Pennsylvania gentleman by the name of Lt. Joseph Cabel. He too loves a woman, Liam ( Yuha Notsuka) a Tonkinese woman and the daughter of Bloody Mary.

Rogers and Hammerstein's South Pacific is arguably there best musical (Oklahoma, The King and I, The Sound of Music). Like all of Rogers and Hammerstein musicals, South Pacific deals with a serious message, however, much of it is sublime. Not to be political nor dictatorial Rogers and Hammerstein put forth a great book with Joshua Logan and its message is never too forward. As Nellie and Cable try to deal with people who are not like themselves and who are not from the same part of the world, here they must look inward to find what they really want in their future. </>

In this South Pacific we were treated to fabulous sets by Randel Wright, brilliant choreography by Bob Richard, top notch direction by Jeffery B. Moss and versatile lighting by Charlie Morrison.

Amazingly both the leading actors and the Ensemble cast were terrific by way of singing and dancing. While all the songs here tonight were memorable: " Bloody Mary", "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Out Of My Hair", " Honey Bun","This Nearly Was Mine" were showstoppers. Big League Productions put forth a first rate production T MPAC- this was a Broadway quality effort by everyone and one musical that should not be missed!
