Client Project: Futsal Focus

Background: Futsal is a variant of association football played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly played indoors. It can be considered a version of five-a-side football. Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller, harder, low-bounce ball. The surface, ball, and rules together favour ball control and passing in small spaces. The BBC football writer Alistair Magowan has said, "The emphasis is on improvisation, creativity and technique."

Brief: My mission was to take the current Futsal Logo ( which was a hurricane symbol) and create a logo and merchandise with a strong British theme that would present an image of power and pride which would help the YMCA Southport Futsal Club stand out from other local Futsal Teams in Liverpool, which would, in turn, encourage more kids to join the club. 

Target Audience: This Promotional campaign was to be aimed exclusively at the public at large, male and female of any age that enjoyed the game of football and had the desire to take their skills to the next level. This particular section of the public has grown up watching and playing soccer and are familiar with the tactics of the game and how it has evolved over the last decade or so.

Solution: I noticed that the hurricane symbol resembled a Lions Main, the lion was thought to be the animal that best personifies qualities of 'Britishness'... "Strength", "Courage", "Dignity" and "Pride" etc. Richard the Lionheart chose the three lions to represent England, this symbol on the King's shield would immediately identify him in the midst of battle. I wanted the logo to have a royal prestige, I combined both an illustration of a lions face with the hurricane symbol representing the animals main, the new logo exudes an emotion of power, fearlessness and honour all the personal attributes a player is expected to have when picked to represent the Southport YMCA Futsal Team
