DrinkResponsibly App

DrinkResponsibly App

In the class of ‘Design Methods for Interaction and Systems’ me and my group designed a cell phone application that helps users monitor and control their alcohol consumption. A wearable sensor that works on the concept of tissue spectrometry sends information about the blood alcohol content level to the mobile application.
Objective:

The main idea behind the DrinkResponsibly App was to make the users aware of their limits and prevent excessive alcohol consumption while giving them the liberty to enjoy their drinks.
Design Process:

1) User Research
2) Personas & Storyboard
3) Initial Design
4) Prototype
5) Required changes & Wireframes
6) Final Design

1) User Research:

We performed quantitative and qualitative research as both are equally improtant for creating a complete experience. Target audience included our classmates as well as patrons at the local bars and pubs.

For Quantitative research we conducted surverys. Following is a sample of the questions and responses:
The response to the above question was difficult to comprehend initially. Hence we performed qualitative research and conducted one on one interviews to better understand the target audience.

It came to light that majority of users were open to the idea of an application that prompted them with alerts while they were drinking to help them control their alcohol consumption. However, a sizeable number of people did not want to be to disturbed because they had a good control over their drinking habits. Although, they still wanted analysis of their past drinking activities.
2) Personas & Storyboard:

Our target users goals and expectations were set during this stage. Based on the user research 2 personas were created.

Personas along with the User Research stage helped us majorly in the requirement gathering process which indicated clearly the funtional and non-functional requirements of the application.

Storyboard helped in setting up a scenario during which our application satisfies the user's needs and expectations from the application.

3) Initial Design:

Using the preceding stages, each of our group members created a low-fedility diagram. It is best that the low fedility diagram is created by every group member as it helps us get the best design by combining the effective aspects of each of the designs.

4) Protoype:

After detailed discussion over each members low-fedility diagrams, we created an interactive prototype that would help us understand the functioning of the application clearly.
5) Required Changes & Wireframes:

Final changes discussed on white board
Wireframes:

First set of Final Designs:
Once we tested these designs with new users, we found htat the users expected bigger and bolder icons that would hint them to press those buttons under influence.
Also, they suggested that the screens were dull and it should be vibrant.
6) Final Design:

We gathered feedback from different first time users and designed a richer final design.

My Responsibilities:

•  Worked on the building the idea for the project with one more team member
•  Worked diligently towards the user research and requirement gatherting process
•  Developed a persona
•  Created the low fedility diagram
•  Created the storyboard
•  Created the wireframes along with the final design along with the team members
