Stepwells of India

As part of one of our experiments and explorations with light we Re-visualized how Agrasen Ki Baoli, New Delhi will look during the night as it is not accessible after sunset. We studied this ancient structure with respect to Architecture and Anthropology drew ideas and mapped them with the current context. The design intent was to slowly expose the user to lights from low intensity to high as they descend into the stepwell and the bottom levels are illuminated with caustic effects to create water ripple effects such that from the topmost level the user will perceive there is water inside the stepwell. The arches and niches are illuminated in such a way that their morphology is accentuated and complements it.
