These four pieces are my final artworks for the wee beasties project that I was tasked with completing in my Visual Communication introduction class. The final project for this particular unit, I was provided a mock brief form my lecture based of a real-world company Visit Inverness Loch Ness, where it stated I had to produce four creature designs and an environment inspired by a news story describing the discovery of a species of super plankton found in loch ness.
I began the project with a twelve-page drawing exercise, where I produced a set of sketches based of images of micro photography found on Nikon small world website. From here I took these sketches and developed them into more simple design I could recreate in Adobe Illustrator, around this time I also created a research page into Nikon small world and my client Visit Inverness Loch Ness, which I evidenced in my sketchbook. For some time I was unsure on how to continue the project, as I was dissatisfied with previous artwork, until I found inspiration in the designs of fifties B movie monsters, whose strange and goofy designs helped inspire the appearance of the final four creatures.
I continued the project by creating an environment for my creatures, which I had originally produced as sketches where I used pictures of Loch Ness for the reference, before producing the final design In Illustrator. I then repeated the process with the final four creature designs, staring as a hand drawn image before importing them into Illustrator, adding colour and texture. I finished the project by placing the designs in there enviorment, before adjusting the files to the client’s needs. I am overall satisfied with the final outcome, as I attempted to be creative with my designs, and the amount of detail I put into them. I was also successful at completing the project to the brief’s standards and file type requirement.
