Many people have heard of professionals who are called oral and maxillofacial surgeons. While it may be easy to take it for granted that a maxillofacial surgeon is just an addition to the main title (oral surgeon), this is not valid. An oral surgeon may not be a maxillofacial surgeon.

An oral surgeon is trained in dental science and exclusively treats injuries and disorders of the mouth and gum tissues. Oral surgeons perform denture fittings, extract impacted wisdom teeth, fill dental crowns, and treat injuries and infections in the dental root canals. They are also proficient in procedures that treat various forms of oral diseases.

Maxillofacial surgeons are generally oral surgeons who have undergone additional training in treating various traumas that concern the facial aspect of the head and the neck. These traumas and disorders range from complex facial injuries to tumors and infections. Examples include cancers of the head and neck, skeletal abnormalities, and salivary gland diseases. These disorders can be treated to address concerns like chronic facial pain and bite irregularities. Maxillofacial surgeons also provide bone-fused dental implants and reconstruction of the facial bone following disfigurement by trauma.
