OVERVIEW:
Humane Technology Sister is an art project aimed at:
- Encouraging humane use of technology.
- Teaching positive technology habits.
- Manifesting empathy and understanding for each other.
- Increase the reporting of trolls and cyberbullies.
- Discourage toxic digital behavior.
- Bring awareness to mental health.
- Discourage suicidal ideations.
STRATEGY:
Instagram is a visual medium so brands first need desirable content on their feed. Research shows that users of Instagram prefer to see videos and aesthetically pleasing visuals. Additionally, this art was designed to reflect currently budding trends in graphic design.
The tone and voice of the brand was created to be casual and young. Terms like "Baddies" are still associated with small, progressive subcultures.
The page is designed to pull users in with beauty and share some information while they are there. Furthermore, follows receive positive tech habit reminds in their feed such as "Take a Scroll Break" and "Go Drink Water".
DIGITAL ACTIVISM:
Posts and comments are carefully worded to attract those effected by misinformation. The lack of diversity in language across those who spread misinformation means that we can use their own language to attract trolls, cyberbullies, and those effected by misinformation to our feed.
Volunteers browse comment sections of public figures who are harassed by misinformation trolls to find the most abusive comments and the accounts displaying the worst behaviors. First, we report the comment. We then scrub their feed and report any violent posts, dangerous posts, or posts featuring misinformation. We then follow the trolls account because Instagram makes it very easy to track the people you are following. Additionally, those you follow so in the comments first. We can continue to reach out to the same accounts displaying abusive behavior.
