Cognitive Artifacts in Complex Work
One semester project/ two member team

In this project the goal was to re-design the educational procedure of a macramé weaving method.
In the research stage, cognitive ethnography methodologies were used, to gather the field data.  We first organised a series of seminars for new users in which they were taught basic macramé weaving methods. During the seminars we recorded the participant’s natural course of work practice using video. At the same time, we filmed and interviewed an experienced user, using the same macramé methods.
In the analysis stage, we combined our data from both inexperienced and experienced users.
We then categorized the procedure into different phases and for each phase we identified separate steps that need to be done, and the main goal. Furthermore, we recognised common failures from inexperienced users over the days of their learning process and created an embodiment model. At the same time we recorded possible artifacts both physical and intangible, from the experienced user.
In the end, we proposed a series of educational artifacts that can help a macramé teacher to introduce macramé to new users.
