Donkwa (also known as Maize-peanut balls) is a mainstream Nigerian snack made from dried, roasted maize and peanuts. It is usually said that the Snack belongs to Hausa people because it originated from the North.

"Donkwa by thrive foods" is a product aimed at modernizing the popular "Donkwa snack" to meet everyday demand and consumption like most snacks.

During our in-house research (product research, customer experience and market research) we were able to gather 2 core challenges and concerns of consumer in relation to the snack. They are:

1. AVAILABILITY - Donkwa is not readily available in many states of the federation thereby depriving eager consumer of getting their favourite snack to eat at will;

A particular lover and consumer said he only get to eat Donkwa once or at most twice a year; and that is whenever his family travels to the North for festive visit.

This pose a major concern, Thrivefoods intend to solve this challenge by mass Production, Introduction of Portable Packaging and Nationwide distribution of Don-Kwa to Retail Stores.


2. HYGIENE - A good number of people despite liking Donkwa are restricted by their fears in relation to its preparation; being a street snack, it is believed to be unhygienic and that makes it unhealthy for consumers that care about their food hygiene.

Thrivefoods intend to produce the snack in a decent and standard environment hence assuring the consumers that their hygiene is secured.


The discoveries made during the research gave a direction on how to craft an appropriate message for the marketing and communication; words that the audience will be able to connect and resonate with, that was reflected in the marketing and advertising designs created.​​​​​​​

It was really exciting working on this project.
