Sombre is a play of that feeling–downcast in the midst of a bright season. This work, especially the entire use of color that contrasts golden yellow with ice blue and Persian blue, takes heavy inspiration from Piet Mondrian’s Evolution triptych (1911) since it’s one of my favorite works from that era–let alone my favorite work by the artist.
