As Long As It Shines

A world made of plastic
Where all is possible
And nothing is real.

A simple cheap material can imitate a precious one, its only real material value is the exaggerated quantity.
We live in a visual age, where everything must be big, grand, and shiny in order to be valued and appreciated.
Anything can become desirable, with the right adjustments, additions, and garnishing.

And we adore this fakeness.
Because it doesn’t matter, as long as it shines.

For my project I used a recycled plastic material, known as Bubble Wrap.
The material, traditionally used for protecting fragile and precious objects, is used here to protect our fragile psyche. In today’s society we require a new kind of armor, one that will wrap us with glory, give us status, and prove our worth.

I created a new material by ironing the bubble wrap with a fake gold leaf trapped inside. Which at a first glace gave it the desirable appearance of gold, though a second look reveals that that is not the case.
