Visual Diaries (Diários Visuais in Portuguese) is an exhibition from the artist Chico Baldini, who uses notebooks and sketchbooks as frames for a frantic production of illustrations. All of his work consists of these open illustrated diaries, and the exhibition intends to explore this unique and yet very intimate form of not just sketching but also producing finished works of art. Chico was in need of a graphic identity for the exhibition and the result could not be closer to the essence of his work: it brings to life the core element of every diary’s structure - the sewing - transforming the stitches into the letters ‘i’ of the exhibition’s name in its graphic signature.

The intention was to come up with a solution that could express all about Chico and his exhibition in one: it was then established that the diaries, the elements that really makes his concept so unique, should get focus attention on this project.
Core is Key
On a sketchbook the sewing works as the element that holds the pages together - it’s its core, its essence - and this function was literally translated into the graphic signature - holding the characters together to form the exhibition’s name, were each stitch corresponds to a letter ‘i’, forming the words.
