The First ever all electric BMW i4 exterior Design project
The BMW i4 exterior design project, which started in mid 2017, was completed and production started in October 2021 and is now on sale. It was developed through a highly dynamic design process in line with the rapid paradigm shift towards electrification of automobiles.
With the beautiful proportions of an elegant and sporty four-door coupe, it is very practical and designed as a perfect all-electric four-door coupe designed with the best balance in every aspect. It adopts a flexible platform to ideally select both an electric drivetrain and an internal combustion engine drivetrain, and it is characterised by a product design that provides consumers with various options according to different drivetrains and product lines. For that reason, the complex design matrix in which various design parts must be harmoniously combined during the design process was a very difficult challenge throughout the design development process.
The visual expression of dynamism, elegance and sustainability. The BMW 14 blends the customary sporting elegance of the brand's coupés with the comfort of a four-door model and an injection of modern functionality. The stretched proportions and clear use of forms in its body design send out a message of exclusivity and the dynamic flair for which BMW is renowned. And accents in BMWiBlue for the largely blanked-off kidney grille, the battery technology in the floor area of the car and the sporty diffuser elements-which optimise the car's aerodynamics- highlight their sustainability-friendly credentials. Short overhangs, slim pillars, doors with frameless windows and a roofline that flows smoothly into the rear underscore a silhouette that very much fits the BMW coupé mould. Slim headlights, available as an option with BMW Laserlight, and the striking BMW kidney grille with its discreetly integrated camera, ultrasonic and radar sensors are the defining features of the front end. The BMW i4 eDrive40 in M Sport specification and the BMW i4 M50 employ their own distinctive design features to underscore their performance-focused character. An M Carbon exterior package can be ordered as an option, while model- specific M Performance Parts are included in the Genuine BMW Accessory range.
