Epson Calendar 2022
Epson launched its Calendar project in 2000 with the aim to demonstrate the high quality of their photo printers and — for 20 years — the Epson Calendar has showcased the work of the greatest masters of Italian photography. The 2021 edition, illustrated by Gianluca Folì, inaugurated a new journey dedicated to illustration on fine art paper.
I had the honor and pleasure to work on the latest edition of the Calendar, side by side with the Epson Marketing & Communication team and Gianluca Folì, art director of the whole project. It was a huge creative challenge: I had to deal with concept development, story making and, of course, illustration. The design process took over 8 months of hard and rewarding work.

Client: Epson Italia
Art Direction: Gianluca Folì
Graphic Design: Sunday Büro
Print: Opificio Arte Stampata (fine art print) / Lazzati Industria Grafica (offset print, die cut, lamination & packaging)

“Colour transcends time and influences the way we perceive
our present, and so the way we express ourselves.
Visually, we are that which nourishes us”

— Marco Goran Romano

The project
The Epson 2022 Calendar is a journey in our collective memory, through the decades from the 1920s to the present and beyond, in styles, creativity, fashion and cultures. Twelve people, twelve illustrations, twelve professions involved in creativity are interconnected and inspired through the strength of colours and shapes, the vitality of gestures and the dynamism of creativity.

Each panel, dealing with a different decade, is linked to the preceding ones by evocative elements, coming one after the other in a play of cross-references and references: developing a common thread that allows us to retrace a full century of history, while rediscovering the legacies left to us.

Our journey becomes a historical investigation into a series of visual and cultural references, social and musical phenomena, all of these like sediments accumulated in time, and by time. Now, it is up to us to preserve this legacy and carry it forward to the future.

Panels drawn in digital vector techniques. Original prints on fine art paper by Opificio Arte Stampata, a Digigraphie certified workshop, using Epson SureColor SC-P7500 printers and Epson UltraChrome Pro12 K3 inks.

“Marco Goran Romano applies his personal, contemporaryand refined language to the interpretation of the Second Edition of the Epson Calendar dedicated to Illustration.
His is a time machine, a unique investigation into past, present and future on a timeline marked by shapes, color and creative crafts.

There is no doubt: Goran has succeeded in taking color to a new level of interpretation and fruition, combining a dynamic and vibrant palette with the rhythm of time, which literally flies”

— Gianluca Folì

Time-lapse
This infographic reveals, through the use of colored lines, the recurrence of specific elements captured withinthe individual calendar panels. Each path is colored with the shade that best characterizethe panel of first appearance. A dot of the same color indicates its presence on the next board. The play of inter-panel cross-references reaches apex in the month of December, which contains elements present in all previous illustrations, illustrating that the future is the result of everything that has gone before.
