This is my favourite fashion editorial, each editorial has its own challenges and its own particular look, but this shoot tapped into my theatrical and dramatic side. As a student I used to photograph a lot of theatre and dance, which I utterly adored. I dusted off my old colour gels and met the crew at Trinity.
The place has that look about it, a bit mysterious, a bit dramatic with a back street feel. I used various lights with different colour gels as if setting it for the stage. These weren’t just pictures, or fashion but we also told a story. The first shot was with the male model, he was essentially the ‘weak’ journalist, we put him on the stairs with a typewriter and dramatised the staircase rails. This shot looks like something out of a comic book, it had all the right elements, dark shadows, punchy colours and so much can be read into it. We took over the venue with lights everywhere.

The narrative is about a strong woman, she is a celebrity musician of sorts with this journalist hounding her for a story. He is infatuated with her – she is unrelentingly dismissive. She is depicted as the strong beautiful character in the fashion story. We chose a blonde wig, to juxtapose the darkness of the scene. I used shadows to mould and shape the highlights which make her glow and soar from the page. I particularly like the close-up shot where her skin looks like that of a pearl. Bianca is my favourite hair and make-up artist, she has such flare and talent and totally loved the shoot.
The editorial opener is the dps (double page spread, first picture above) of the model in the red dress. It just pops off the page, and lures you into the mysterious story that is the fashion editorial. The wardrobe was spectacular. There was a pair of designer wedges that had me mesmerised, I even tried them on, and was surprised that I could quite comfortably walk in them, they were bronze wedges from Danielle di Mauro Designer Range (the shoes can be seen in the image where the model is intimidatingly standing over the male journalist).
