A Japanese notan is originally a carving that illustrates some aspect of nature and uses black and white reflections to create negative space and balance. The goal of this project was to explore the concept of the Japanese notan and to create our own. The process involved drawing 20 roughs which were then refined into 4 final concepts. Then these 4 roughs were transformed to create 4 alterations, of which one final concept was chosen to be cut out of a 5x5" black paper to be presented as the final.
