Project Background
The object of the assignment was to explore different ways to create the same animal. Choosing an animal such as the Fennec Fox and making it into different artistic styles was the goal. The ending objective was to create an encyclopedia version, a logo version, a gesture version, and an essence version.
Logo
The idea was to create a logo that could be used for a corporate logo. For logo design, experimentation with the principles of design such as knockout, gestalt, and negative space were required. A logo should be simple, recognizable, and pass the shrink test.
Process
Using many types of design technics and different types of thick pens or brushes was how this logo was created. This design was done and considered many different ways. However, having the outline with stripes and a little bit of knockout was the final drawing. It is recognizable, has a little detail, and it is straightforward.
Gesture
The point of a gesture is to get as creative as possible by using whatever materials laying around. It also has to be done quickly, but still capture the essence of the animal. Using random objects such as a razor blade or even a soda can, can result in the best gesture drawing. Making mistakes is all apart of this process.
Process
Using materials such as an India ink brush pen, grey marker, black paint, and black crayon. Working quickly and maybe forgetting details can actually help in the long run. Some drawings look better without the foxes face or with just the foxes whiskers. Making mistakes and focusing on capturing the essence with the big ears and fluffy tail is the most important part.
Transformation
The point of a transformation drawing is to make puns or a play on words with the animal. Some examples would be phrases such as "sly as a fox" or even a recognizable character such as swiper the fox. Finding things the animal looks, acts like, or pop culture trends about it is also helpful.
Process
Having fun and thinking outside of the box about what the animal could become is all about of the process of a transformation drawing. Using a play on words to create "Jack in the Fox" as a transformation drawing. Some of the sketches also include Swiper the fox, a Trickster fox, and FireFox like the computer application.
Encyclopedia
The goal of the encyclopedia drawing was to make the drawing as realistic and true to the animals nature as possible. Using a photo reference and transfer paper is how the drawing was made. While the transfer paper was on top, tracing each detail in the fox was important to make the fur and tail as realistic as possible. Then adding details to the fur, face, and ears was the last step.
