MORNING ROOM
September 9th - December 9th, 2021 | Interior Design
Project type: Individual
Programs used: Revit, Enscape, AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign
Designed for a fourth year Interior Design studio, Morning Room Market Hall is a bright and open space, welcoming all and creating a hub of community within Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District.
Morning Room includes a market hall - featuring fare from local farmers, bakers, chefs, artisans, and makers - as well as a glittering dining hall with a coffee and tea bar, and a cozy lounge tucked away behind reception. Through the market hall, community classrooms provide space for passing on knowledge, picking up skills and creating connections.

Site Analysis
Conceptual Narrative

Harvest - in which we explore, search, and gather what is ripe and precious. Our findings are revered and shared - how can we make the most of this transient abundance? joy is found here, too, in picnics, preparations, roasting, baking, and preserving as our treasure trove transforms into something new that can be rediscovered in the colder months to come.
Artefact

The object reminds first of a cup, recalling connection, hospitality, and abundance. Woven together of many different threads, bound tightly and yet not meeting at all sides.
In creating this object I thought of the layers of connection found in a marketplace - years of family tradition, meetings between friends, family, and strangers, each occasion ripe with possibility for new connection and for the intermingling of old and new. Moments of coloured thread spoke to me of those new connections, as they are bright, bold sparks against a stronghold of familiarity. At the top, some stray pieces remain unwoven, as do many of our stories which are yet to come.
Form Development

Taken from the artefact-making process, forms of woven rope were abstracted and layered to start to create spaces.
Sinuous, single-line curves were prized, speaking to both the design intention of a welcoming community space, and to the ideas of weaving, layering, and craftsmanship explored in earlier stages.

Reflected Ceiling Plan
The building exterior keeps to the intent expressed in the form development and design proposals - building additions weave through the existing structure, creating something new while retaining the past.
The glass façade features a sinuous mullion design that catches the light, and, alongside drop lighting fixtures, offsets the strong horizontality of the space by drawing your eye up and inwards.
