Benson Rights
Packaging Design
This project features the design of a package based on Olivia Benson, from the TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Olivia Benson has been a police officer at NYPD's Special Victims Unit for over 20 years, advancing in ranking from detective, lieutenant, and commander. Benson is known for being empathetic and supportive to victims and survivors. Worry stones were chosen as the product to encourage the healing process of the survivor, as Benson commonly does.
Sketches for the logo and initial designs drew off the character's contrasting sympathetic support toward victims and tough attitude toward perpetrators, as well as illustrations reminiscent of NYPD badges. The combination of a simple and an elegant font continue on a design of the contrast in Benson's actions. Muted, calming colors inspire the emotions and steps of the healing process.
The final solutions include three designed containers holding worry stones. The outside of the package showcases the logo, designated stone, and Benson's rights for the survivor. Benson's Rights play off the "Miranda rights" read to suspects at the time of arrest to Olivia's empathetic supportive message for victims. The inside lid features a note from Olivia, using different quotes from the TV show. The three types of stones are inspired by different progressions of Olivia Benson's character, from detective to commanding officer, as well as from defensively determined, to calmly resigned, then inspiringly courageous.
