A heat pump system works in the opposite way as a refrigerator. A fridge transfer’s heat out of its interior, but a heat pumps transfer’s heat to its interior. Heat pumps take advantage of the "thermal storehouse" that is our atmosphere.
When running, an air source heat pump takes in warm air from outside and compresses it until it is very hot. This compressed air is then passed through a coil called the evaporator. The evaporator contains refrigerant which is an amazing substance that can absorb a lot of heat but releases it fairly quickly when needed.
