AIGA San Diego Poster Project

Below is a poster I submitted for the 2021 AIGA San Diego Poster Project.  It was a contest and I am happy to say that I won 3rd place.  It is one of my first illustrative pieces I have published and I am excited on how it turned out.  With this piece I realized that illustration is a lot work but it is all worth it at the end.

"The poster celebrates the exterior renovation of the San Diego Automotive Museum and it was an initiative to bring awareness, and educate the community about Balboa Park's Committee of 100's work, to bring the Balboa Park Palisades public space back to it's 1935 glory."

When making this project, I did not sketch anything out.   I went straight to digitizing because I wanted to easily move things around as I created the poster.

In the poster, I wanted to capture a bit of what was on the murals to honor the past therefore I added commerce buildings and agriculture as well as the old truck and steam locomotive.  For honoring the present the scenic beauty was added and the California Tower which is an icon of San Diego as well as the beach and cliffs.  Although it was celebrating the murals, I felt it was important to incorporate the transportation aspect of it since it is on a Automotive Museum.  I added the plane, speed rail train, a boat and delivery truck to represent the present and old trucks and a steam locomotive to represent the past.  Since the mural depicted scenes from the 1930's, I added the 1930 on the train.  Also the renovation was by the Committee of 100 therefore, I incorporated the C100 title on the ship for acknowledgment.  At the bottom center, I added piece of the artwork around the murals which is inspired by Aztec art.
