DUNE Procreate Portraits
Based on the 2021 HBO Science fiction series
I am creating a series of portraits exploring a painterly style for science fiction characters. Procreate provides a way to paint fast and loose while still defining details to create a classic illustration style.

It is an old truism that drawing strengthens the painting. The drawing of Momoa took three tries and I'm still not happy with it. A different day and a different subject and sometimes it just comes together. Making it look spontaneous takes practice.

I love that hair and the look in his eyes. The armor provided a nice smooth cool contrast to the orange and red gritty sand. This was a fun painting to do. It sort of painted itself.

Timothy Chalamet can be a challenging render when trying for a likeness. No age lines yet and delicate features leave me with less to work with.

This was the first in a new series of Procreate portraits based on the 2021 reboot of this science fiction novel. I loved the first installment streaming on HBO and can't wait for the second installment and conclusion. I finally feel comfortable doing full-on portraits in Procreate.

A dark character compromised by circumstances.

This character was so mysterious and intense watching over the city so I show her emerging from behind one of the rocky cliffs that mark the landscape. Arakis is a planet of biting sand in the air so creating a gritty texture to the faces was a logical choice for this series.
Procreate Painting of Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho from DUNE
Such a classic warrior role for Momoa. I definitely have to do a portrait of this guy as Aquaman.
Procreate painting of Zendaya as Chani Kynes from DUNE
Her character will become more important in the second installment. So far she has appeared against the sweeping backdrop of the desert landscape of Arakis wearing the oxygen apparatus used outside.
