The two guys behind Broken Plate Productions came to us looking to update their spice rub labels. The labels they had were created in a Microsoft program, using word and type effects that didn't really fit. They had been printing them at home on Avery Label stock. The labels had a white background and very little color, making it difficult to distinguish one flavor from another. Finally, they were using clipart for both the company logo and the spice rub character.
I was asked to create a unique "extreme" character to represent the spice rub line, clean up the type, and something to contrast each flavor from the others. They wanted the labels to reflect their casual, fun personalities. I suggested using different colors to distinguish the flavors, and I also offered to design a company logo as well. Their final request was that I incorporate the diamond and circle border they'd had on the original labels.
