Bound
An experimental work that draws upon the surrealist film genre. Diving into the mental landscape, it investigates the conflicting waves of anxiety that surround gender expression/fluidity, and how it can bind those who are still exploring their gender identity to a cycle of insecurity and suppression.
As the surrealist film genre dispenses with a linear narrative, scenes are presented in a more irrational format, reflecting the bizarre images of our subconscious landscape.
The intense purple tint represents androgyny. For those in the genderfluid community who do present themselves authentically, the mirrored blank carousel shows how society often perceives them at a surface level - as overly ‘showy’, associated with unprofessionalism, disregarded as immature or even childish.

They are trapped within a neverending loop of recurring thoughts, afflicted with a lack of direction, purpose, or identity - a carousel ride that we know is frighteningly fatal with just a glance at a breakdown of today's suicide rates.
Further focusing on deconstructing the stereotypical standards of a female body, this surreal animation style delves into the internal consciousness, examining the mind’s perception of its own body.
The crumbling of a pristine outer canvas reveals a new perspective and a second head, symbolic of now validating two or more ways of gender expression instead of being limited to just one.
The intrusive shadows of the carousel onto the blank background, the ironic close-up shots of a face that is set in neutrality, and the haunting soundtrack all serve to recreate a surreal mental landscape that is ruled by anxiety.

This work captured a snippet of the mind's chaotic struggle to find an authentic sense of self, due to the invasion of society's scrutiny.

Project completed as part of UNSW's DART1200 course, S2 2021.
