The typeface used (Berg), with its clear differences in stroke width and pronounced curves, forms a subtle contrast to the otherwise classic, image-based layout. Its formal language evokes associations with waves and the movements of surfing. It gives the design an appropriate dynamic, but does not work against the imagery.
