Dehumanization at the Hands of Technology

An educator, priest, and chaplain, Father John Jimenez has helped the residents of San Francisco, California with both their spiritual and academic journeys for almost 23 years. Father John Jimenez is also a writer who has penned articles on diverse subjects including technology’s role in dehumanization.

According to a University of California-Berkeley article published in June 2019, technology isolates users making them less trusting and more lonely. Worse yet, it makes humans less connected to their communities. As technological advances make work and leisure more convenient, many find they only need to interact with the interface of an application or website to get their work done, reducing the need to talk to another person. Perceiving the human element of sharing knowledge and experiences becomes less relevant to individual goals.

On the other hand, people who are disenfranchised and marginalized by social systems have less access to the same financial and technological resources that their wealthier community members are spending more time with. This is significant because, as people become more connected to technology, they become more separated from other humans to the point of not understanding the daily struggles of people from different socioeconomic situations. Ultimately, this technological inequity and its role in limiting access to information and opportunities to grow empathy may contribute to people developing more dehumanizing views of each other.
