Redevelopment of the Fort of Santa Caterina (Favignana)
The design idea is born from a careful analysis of the potentials and characteristic features of the place trying to create a basis for a work that contains itself the natural beauty that the island of Favignana always has. This process has given life to an action that wants to dialogue with the surrounding landscape and the context in which it has to be inserted. The language of this coexistence will be reflected in the design logic, creating instead a means of contrast in the architectural composition that has the intent to cancel the similarity between the existing building and the new one, maintaining a clear separation between the history of the place and the new intentions.
Therefore the intervention consists of two strong constructive actions dedicated to very different fields of use, a suspended footbridge connecting the distribution hall to the points of interest present on the top of the building and to an auditorium located on the walkable roof of the structure. The need that gives rise to the insertion of the footbridge is the will to differentiate the areas of use by keeping the fort and its element as a binding item of complexity, allowing the visitor to use the auditorium and the area of catering in an autonomous way facilitating the coexistence of them with the exhibition spaces.
The second project intervention consist in creating a space where the public’s attention revolves around two centers: the speaker and the panoramic view of the coast. A series of different sun light filtering elements have been created where transparency increases while moving away from the existing volumes, in order to allow the correct lighting of the interior space.
