As the name suggests, final mile delivery, or last mile delivery, refers to the process of transporting a parcel from a transportation hub to its final destination, like a retail store or personal residence. This final step is the most critical in the delivery process. It consists of five basic steps, starting with customers placing an order in a centralized system. That order is shipped to a transportation hub, assigned to a delivery driver according to their truck route, scanned before being loaded, and successfully delivered to the customer.

The challenge with final mile delivery largely lies in the inefficiencies tied to the process. Differing driver skills, routing options, road conditions, and varying truck capacities all contribute to changing efficiency levels when a parcel is delivered. Companies spend lots of time and money on final mile delivery to eliminate these inefficiencies as much as possible since customer satisfaction is key to a business’ success. In fact, Business Insider reported that 53 percent of the total shipping cost of a parcel goes toward final mile delivery.
