Canadian Aquatic Invasive Species Network, University of Windsor, Windsor Ontario
To combat the threat of aquatic invasive species in Canada’s vast waters, a network of environmental scientists was assembled to study the vectors and pathways of these species, establish strategies for prevention and remediation and to provide expert advice to federal, provincial, state and local governments.
Dr Hugh McIsaac was the director of the network, and as the researcher who first discovered the now-infamous zebra mussel in lake St Clair in the late ’80s, using the iconic mollusk was the most direct approach to engage Canadians in the effort.
